A 1.8 magnitude earthquake has been recorded at Tumut.

Houses shuddered around Tumut tonight (Thursday) following a small earthquake that originated about 10km west of the township, near the Visy pulp and paper mill, at 10.21pm.

Geoscience Australia reported a 1.8 magnitude earthquake.

“It was small, but enough to have caused the explosion that people are reported to have felt,” a Geoscience Australia spokesperson told the Times.

The earthquake lasted a matter of moments but rattled windows and brought many people out of their homes to investigate the cause.

Social media lit up following the event.

The earthquake originated between Tumut and Adelong, near the Visy pulp, according to Geoscience Australia.
