Motorcycle passenger dies after being hit by tree branch

Emergency services at the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident on the Snowy Mountains Highway, four kilometres south of Tumut, on Saturday afternoon.

A female motorcycle passenger died after being hit by a falling tree branch just south of Tumut yesterday afternoon (Saturday)

About 3.10pm a 57-year-old man was riding a motorcycle on the Snowy Mountains Highway, towards Talbingo, with a 62-year-old woman as a pillion passenger, when a falling tree branch struck the vehicle about four kilometres from Tumut.

The female passenger, understood to be from the Canberra region, died at the scene.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to Tumut District Hospital, where he will undergo mandatory testing.

Officers from the Riverina Police District established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident. Snowy Mountains Highway was closed for several hours, with traffic diverted along the Tumut Plains Road.

A report will now be prepared for the Coroner.
