Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal blaze in Tumut.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal house fire at Tumut yesterday.

About 4.40pm Saturday, police and officers from Fire & Rescue NSW were called to a house on Banksia Crescent following reports of a fire.

Neighbours were evacuated while fire-fighters attempted to extinguish the blaze.

Fire-fighters entered the building and conducted a search of the premises where they located an unidentified body.

Local Rural Fire Service brigades also attended.

A crime scene has been established and will be examined by specialist forensic officers and fire investigators with the cause of the fire yet to be determined.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire are continuing and police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
