Every Tuesday, from 10am – 3pm, Adelong residents over 65 meet with BaptistCare workers at the Adelong Health and Community Centre from 10am – 3pm.
Their numbers have dropped off, however, and on Tuesday, October 24, they are inviting anyone who may be interested to come along for a community open day.
There will be a sausage sizzle, coffee and cake, and activities, and staff are hoping some potential new members give them a try.
“We’re trying to encourage people to step out of their homes, just for a day, to have a cup of coffee and some social contact,” said employee Dell Williams.
“We’ll have some activities, and people can make some new friends.”
The group can organise community transport from both Adelong and Tumut, and want to stress the group is for everyone.
“We have men and women, and we’re actually not a part of the church,” said employee Danielle Duncan.
“We don’t want people to think it’s just for Baptists because we’re not all – well I’m not! We’ve got a couple of Roman Catholics, Church of England…we’re very open,” said member Esther Whitley.
“I live out of town, and I so look forward to coming in for these days.”
The Social Club also runs day trips, with the next one going to the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory.
Most days, though, they play cards and bingo, and members bring their knitting or work on crafts and brainteasers.
“We have a lot of supplies, for craft and things like that, but you can bring your own stuff along – everyone’s welcome to bring whatever they like,” said Danielle.
“We also have people teach us stuff that they know how to do, which is always good. We have morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea.”
“It’s a fabulous lunch, let me assure you!” said Dell.
“We certainly don’t starve.”
Anyone interested in going along to the Open Day can simply show up at the Adelong Health and Community Centre, and for more information call the BaptistCare Wagga office on 6937 6101.
