Loved Batlow Community member Keith Dawson was named Snowy Valleys Shire 2019 Citizen of the Year at Australia Day celebrations in Batlow on Saturday.
He shared the honour with Tumut’s Hugh Packard.
Due to ill health, Keith was unable to accept the award in person, so family members Colleen Dawson and Belinda Glynn accepted it on his behalf from Councillor and Batlow resident Margaret Isselmann.
A lifelong resident of Batlow, Keith has been instrumental in the town over the years both as a volunteer and giving countless hours to various committees and organisations including the Batlow Development League which he also chaired for several years.
Over the past seven years Keith has spent many hours of time helping the community in various ways. Firstly with his efforts in helping improve the Batlow Literary Institute with new refurbishment works including the project management of the tasks.
Keith helped build the Hides Park development with his skills and labour and as Chair of the Batlow Senior Citizens Village he manages to keep the facilities at the village to a level of great standard including the construction of concrete driveways and installing perimeter fencing.
Keith is often on call to residents to make repairs and keep the village in a great state. All the while he has worked and met constantly with contractors to keep costs down and works achieved to a timely schedule.
He is described as a humble, hard-working and compassionate citizen with strong family values who has assisted a wide range of people who have sought his help and advice over the years – very much a ‘go-to’ man who expects nothing in return other than to see others happy and successful.
