THE Tumut Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a public forum for Snowy Valleys Council election candidates at Tumut’s Montreal Theatre on the evening of Tuesday, September 5.
“It is free to attend and everyone is welcome,” Chamber president Lorraine Wysman said.
Ms Wysman said Tumut Toastmasters would be lending their expertise to introduce the candidates and help to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Each candidate will give a five-minute talk and will field questions from those gathered.
“Each person will have five minutes, and there will be a bell at four-and-a-half minutes,” Ms Wysman said.
Questions from the public are not to evolve into epics. “The timekeeper’s not going to tolerate speeches from the floor,” Ms Wysman said.
“The night will start at 6pm and we hope to be out by 7.30. The candidates will speak in the order they appear on the ballot.
We are hoping all 10 candidates will be there, but if any are unable to attend, they can submit a 300-word presentation that will be read out on the night.”
The Chamber has run such a forum successfully in the past.
“We actually did it for the last (Tumut Shire) election, and people found it helpful in getting to know the candidates,” Ms Wysman said.
Ms Wysman said all in the community had a vested interest in this election.
“Voting is compulsory, and if people don’t vote, they can’t whinge,” she said.
“We want to put our support as a chamber behind the election as we will be working closely with the future council. These are very exciting times.”
