Tumut could be well represented in the famous lime green of the Canberra Raiders in 2017 after several women impressed at a recent training session held in the nation’s capital.
Tumut locals Julia day, Hunter Machell, Monique Bullock, Brhiannon Perrin, Shanae Freeman, and Monique Toppin made the initial cut to play for the Canberra Raiders in the inaugural Tarsha Gale Cup in 2017, a 9-a-side tournament at the under 18s level, that will be played along the SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup competitions in the New South Wales Rugby League.
One of them, Julia Day, explained how it all panned out, with the squad to be trimmed closer to the start of the 2017 season.
“It got posted on Facebook about upcoming trials and a few of my friends and I decided to go over and try out. We had a fitness test, there was a 20 metre sprint and a 1200 metre run and an agility test,” she said.
Day only found she had made the initial squad last Thursday, and was very excited upon learning she had made the squad, although she knows there is plenty of hard work ahead.
“So far it’s just the training squad, made up of 23 players, and we get emailed the dates for training in December and January. They drop around 7 people so we should have around 15 players in the final squad,” Day said.
Day will be joined by several familiar faces in the team, making the journey that much easier for her amd her teammates as they strive to make the final squad.
“I play League Tag for the Tumut Blues, as have my other friends that I went over with, although some don’t play anymore, and six of us made the training squad,” she said.
“All my friends and family are really excited because Tumut is such a small town, and six of us made it.”
The Canberra Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup training squad is: Emily Banks, Tia Baxter, Monique Bullock, Samantha Cross, Julia Day, Hollie Deaton, Maggie Downs Alannah Fraser, Shanae Freeman, Taylah Frost, Emylee Hawke, Ahlivia Ingram, Keesha Kapea, Shanay Little, Hunter Machell, Nirvana Ngan Woo, Aroha Peri, Brhiannon Perrin, Nirada Phonsaya, Zoe Podmore, Elana Sliwinski, Jana Teivonen, Monique Toppin.
