RIVERINA Highlands RFS and Monaro RFS will now be able to communicate more effectively on the fireground thanks to the generosity of Snowy Hydro.
Snowy Hydro has donated $5000 worth of VHF radios with a specific link to the networks of both RFS regions, who will receive five of them each.
“This will give our crews better capacity on the fireground,” Riverina Highlands District Coordinator Peter Jones said.
“They will give us more range, and potentially, if Snowy Hydro emergency response teams are on the fireground, we will be able to talk to them as well.”
Riverina Highlands RFS Zone Manager Trevor Reeves said the radios would become “absolutely essential for control and command on the fireground.”
Snowy Hydro Lower Tumut Area Manager Guy Boardman was more than happy to hand the radios over.
“We’d be telling fibs if we said we didn’t appreciate everything the RFS guys do,” he said.
“When it comes down to it, we’re very appreciative of the role of the RFS in regional areas.
My role is all about asset protection, and the RFS is crucial in this.”
Snowy Hydro recently upgraded the truck fleet of its emergency response teams at Talbingo, Khancoban and Cabramurra.
“The RFS helped us get the right specifications to upgrade our fleet,” Mr Boardman said.
“They were fantastic and this is a thank you from us in that regard.”
